AKWA IBOM WOMEN TAKE CAMPAIGN AGAINST RAPE TO URUAN

Women in Akwa Ibom have taken the state-wide campaign and sensitization against rape and gender-based violence to Uruan local government area, warning that henceforth perpetrators of rape would be named, shamed and convicted.
Led by the People’s Democratic Party – PDP woman leader in the state, Meme Akpabio, the women said Nigerian women have long been violated and harassed because authorities still perceive rape as a “women issue” leaving women vulnerable to their abusers.
They said with the directive given by the wife of the governor, Martha Emmanuel for a state-wide campaign and awareness, stiffer punishment would be meted out on any offender of sexual assault or violence.
Receiving the delegation, a member of the Ibiaku Uruan council of chief, Obong Ime Ikot who represented the village head condemned the act of rape and promised the full support of the village council against any form of violence against women.
Other stakeholders from Northern Uruan Ward two including the CEO of Planet Radio, Tony Afia, Chief Ime Ekanem among others who spoke also warned indigenes of the community to desist from such act as defaulters would no longer be spared.
