The International Human Rights Commission IHRC has called on the Federal government to establish Special Court to address the rising cases of rape and child molestation in the country.
The Secretary General of the Commission Professor Rafal Marcin Wasik Made the call in a message during a visit to the Chief Judge of FCT High Court Justice Ishaq Bello in Abuja.
The Secretary General who was represented the Country Director International Human Rights Commission, Dr Friday Sani explained that the visit was to endorse the nomination of the Chief Judge FCT High Court Justice Ishaq Bello as Nigeria’s representative at the international Criminal Court as well as advocate for ways to tackle the rising cases of rape and other Human Rights abuses.
He said the Commission was ready to work with the federal government towards addressing the cases of violence and killings in the country and stressed the need for new strategy to check the menace.
The Secretary General also called on the Federal government to assign special judge to handle rape and other gender based violence.
Professor Wasik solicited cooperation for speedy trial and decongestion of Correctional centres
In a response, the Chief Judge of the FCT High Court of Justice, Justice Ishaq Bello explained that the federal government had taken drastic steps to address the issues raised and had concluded plans to establish Children and Young persons court.
He stated that the court was expecting thirty three new judges and some would be assigned to handle cases of rape and child molestation
Justice Bello also pointed out that a bill is before the National Assembly to upgrade Uwais Dispute Resolution Centre to FCT High Court for Arbitration for effective resolution of cases especially with multinational organisations.
The visit witnessed the donation of Plaque, five hundred Face masks and forty five Face Shield from the international Human Rights Commission.
The Chief Judge of the FCT High Court also donated some publications to the Commission.
