The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, AMLSN, wants the Federal Government to use the period of COVID 19 pandemic in creating the Directorate of Medical Laboratory Service in its Ministry of Health.
The National Publicity Secretary of AMLSN, Doctor Casmir Ifeanyi made the call while speaking with newsmen in Abuja.
Doctor Ifeanyi said the creation of the Directorate became necessary to ensure synergy with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC for a coordinated laboratory services on COVID 19 pandemic and other diseases ravaging the country.
He also stressed the need to include sound Medical Laboratory Scientists in the Presidential Task Force, PTF on COVID 19 to offer professional and effective advice on laboratory research of combating the pandemic in the country.
According to him, the inclusion of a Sound Medical Laboratory Scientists would also enhance efficient contact tracing and testing on COVID 19 as being obtainable in other affected countries around the world.
Doctor Ifeanyi stated that AMLSN has already created COVID 19 Task Force in the 36 States of the Federation and the FCT to complement the efforts of both Federal and State Governments in curtailing the spread of corona virus in the country.
He explained that the Association had equally been conducting contact tracing and sampling towards combating the pandemic.
The National Publicity Secretary who said the Association had embarked on research and production of alcoholic based hand sanitizer stated AMLSN had distributed Personal Protective Equipment, PPEs to some Nigerians across the country through the Association’s Branches Nationwide.
While advising both the Federal and State Governments to effectively engage Medical Laboratory Scientists in their fight against COVID 19, Doctor Ifeanyi reiterated the commitment of the Association towards protecting Nigerians against corona virus and other diseases in the country.
He also advised all Nigerians to take responsibility by complying with all guidelines on COVID 19 towards safeguarding themselves from the virus.
