Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, Abuja Branch has donated Personal Protective Equipment, PPEs worth millions of naira to the FCT Administration towards the fight against COVID 19 pandemic in the Territory.
Presenting the PPEs at the FCT Minister’s Office in Abuja, the Chairman of PSN, Abuja Branch, Pharmacist Jelili Adewale Kilani said the gesture was to compliment the efforts of FCT Administration in curtaining the spread of corona virus most especially in rural communities of the FCT.
Pharmacist Kilani said PSN had already put in place a research Committee that would ensure possible means of curing the disease through drug or vaccine. He therefore stressed the need for community Pharmacists to be incorporated into the FCT COVID 19 response programmes by designating the community pharmacies as COVID 19 testing centres.
While appreciating the government’s gesture of paying COVID 19 hazard allowance to health practitioners working in isolation and treatment centres,
Pharmacist Kilani appealed that the gesture be extended to all health workers operating in FCT hospitals due to the risk of exposure to COVID 19.
He also requested for operational vehicles for the Task Force on Counterfeit and Fake Drugs of FCT, FCTA Drug Abuse Control Committee and PSN Abuja Branch to take care of their logistics.
Pharmacist Kilani who expressed concern over the challenges being fsce by community pharmacy in the area of quackery and charlatans saying the problem has led to the abuse of dangerous drugs and substances as well as increase in crimes, suicide and road traffic accident in the FCT hence the need for a robust endorsement of the extent laws through re-jiggling of the security agents to have a sanitized practice environment for community Pharmacists in FCT.
He also solicited the intervention of FCT Minister on multiple taxes on the Community Pharmacists by respective area councils especially AMAC stating that the action affect the productivity of members of PSN in the FCT.
“Drugs are on the exclusive legislative list and regulated by the regulatory agencies of the Federal Government.
It is therefore painful to us that the community pharmacies in the FCT are being over burdened by the area councils” he lamented. Pharmacist Kilani equally appealed for official location of land for Pharmacists Housing Estate and upgrade of the Central Medical Stores to FCT Drug Management Agency in accordance with the National Drug Distribution Guidelines.
He emphasized the need for the employment and deployment of more Pharmacists to FCT hospitals and primary health care centers to improve health care delivery in the Territory.
In a remark, the Chairman, PSN Abuja COVID 19 Response Committee, Pharmacist Maduekwe Chima said PSN had already commenced sensitization campaign against corona virus in some rural communities of the FCT.
According to Pharmacist Maduekwe Chima, PPEs have also been distributed to people living in rural communities beginning from Mpape Community to combat the spread of the virus.
He therefore advised residents of the FCT to always abide by Government’s directive on COVID 19 to ensure the eradication of the pandemic. Responding after receiving the PPEs, the Minister of the FCT, Mallam Mohammed Bello commended PSN Abuja Branch for it’s support in the fight against COVID 19 in the Territory.
Mallam Bello said FCT Administration would collaborate with PSN Abuja Branch in curtaining corona virus and other diseases in the FCT. The Minister also promised to make land available for the Association for the construction of Pharmacists Housing Estate to further boost the productivity of its members.
PPEs donated to FCT Administration included acholic based hand sanitizers, face masks, first aid boxes, drugs among others.
