Reps Want FG To Reverse Decision On 2020 WAEC Exams

The house of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to rescind the decision of the Federal Ministry of Education withdrawing Nigeria from participating in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination and Other similar examinations.

This is sequel to a motion of urgent national importance moved by Nnolim Nnaji from Enugu state at plenary.

Leading the debate Mr. Nnaji, noted that the COVID-l9 pandemic with its health and socio-economic consequences around the world and particularly Nigeria, has threatened the universal educational system and adversely devastated the global health system.

He added that the World Health Organization alongside other health institutions around the world are intensifying efforts toward the containment of the COVID-l9 pandemic hence the need for all governments to begin to put in policies that would enable them adapt to present realities.

The lawmaker also expressed worry over the contradictory pronouncements on the reopening of schools for the examinations by top officials of the federal government within a short period of time.

The house in a unanimous voice vote adopted the motion and urged the Minister of Education to immediately implement the health safety measures outlined by the Federal Executive Council for the conduct of the examinations as well as provide soap, hand sanitizers and all other requirements stipulated by NCDC.

The house therefore mandated the House Committees on Basic Education, Healthcare Services, Water Resources and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance and report back to the house within two weeks for further legislative action.
